The Appleton Ladies Potato Race
Appleton is a small country town being forced into the present with a recent influx of wealthy city slickers, treechanges and refugees.
Men are men, women are women, and vegetables are not cake … and that’s the way it’s always been. That is, until prodigal daughter Penny returns from the big smoke to set up shop as the local GP.
Simmering tensions come to a head when Penny discovers a serious discrepancy in the annual potato sack race. When Penny decides to take steps to restore parity and coax Appleton into the 21st century, little could she have anticipated the spiralling, hilarious culture war that would follow.
If the hot-potato events seem improbable, Tait's play was inspired by her experience a few years ago in the NSW town of Robertson, when she tried to change things and copped a social media battering for her efforts.
